RESULTS AND STORY ON OUR HRA CREW AT THE SARASOTA INVITATIONAL FEBRUARY, 2012.

2011 Sarasota 5000
SARASOTA 5000

Osprey, Florida

October 2, 2011

It was a beautiful weekend for the Sarasota 5000. The weather was bright and sunny with an early morning temp of about 70 but going up to the upper 80’s by midday rows. The venue was a challenge getting to the start but pretty much a straight run once you left the starting point. Halifax was proudly represented by a group of Master Rowers (and a few Veterans, aka “The Fossil Four”). Most rowers arrived the night before and stayed at various nearby hotels, a few ventured off for the late afternoon and evening and enjoyed a dinner and the sunset on Anna Maria Island, but were happily tucked in bed by 9:30 dreaming of calm waters the next day! The staging area was adequate and provided some shade. Launching was from a floating dock for visiting clubs, while the Sarasota Clubs left from their own nearby docks. It was a long 5000 meter row to the start line - giving plenty of time to work out the kinks and build up energy. Unfortunately several of our racers , including the Fossil Four (i.e. Perry, Ed, David and usually Victor, who was replaced this regatta by one of our newest members, Michelle), had to hot seat it from their Mens 4+ to the Mixed 8+ with less than 10 minutes time to go from one boat to the other, grab some water and protein, and hop into the 8! They did a great job! Medals were won by many of our rowers, but it seemed to be more of the singles and doubles and not the larger crews. We do have to give credit to Michelle and the 3 old codgers in the Mens 4+ who won a BRONZE.
